1. Germplasm Lists: Formation of the Varietal List and Parental Lines
Introduction:
Typically, you will have a list of varieties you want to make a cross. You might self it to produce your seeds stocks that you will use for making your crosses. These are the two kinds of list we will initially make
Objectives: At the end of this chapter, the user should be able to:
- Create a list of varieties
- Add lines to the PARENTAL_LINES list.
Tutorial Steps:
I Set up the Launcher
- Double-click ICIS Launcher (Figure 1).

Figure 1. ICIS Launcher
- Choose the database to work on (In this example, ISGIS.INI)
- Click
Connect to Database button then open ISGIS.INI

II Start SetGen
- Double-click Setgen from launcher (Figure 3). The SetGen window (Figure3.1) will appear.

III Forming the VARLIST2008 List
The process of forming the list of varieites is identical to that of forming a trial. The steps are as follows:
- Select List>New>List from the List menu. Enter the name for the new list (VARLIST2008), enter a title (List of Selected Varieties 2008), select the list type (LST) and check the date.

- Click the
"Add a new list Entry button" on the tool bar to add lines to the list (http://cropwiki.irri.org/icis/index.php/TDM_SET_GENERATION_5.4#Basic_Lists). Enter the a variety (TIANDOUGOU), leave the Entry Code field and Source (although it is advisable to specify the source of the variety). Click OK.

- If the line or variety is not existing in the database, a series of forms will appear. In the first form, you need to specify how the germplasm was developed and details about its given name.

-
- In this form, specify the method of the germplasm. If the development of the germplasm is not known, it is suggested to use the Unknown Derivate Method (Method no =31).
- Specify the type of the name. In this exercise, the name is VARIETY NAME.
- Germplasm Date and Location.: Specify the date the germplasm was developed or harvested and the place it was developed.
- Name Date and Location: Specify the date and location the name was given and the location where it was given.
- Click Ok.
- In the subsequent form, specify other names, attributes and most importantly, the parents of the germplasm. Since the parents of the variety are not known and there are no more additional names or attributes, just click Ok.

- Repeat steps 2, 3 and 4 for the other varieties in the table below.
Designation
TIANDOUGOU
V33
LATA3
V820
FOULATIEBA
KENINKENI
MANGENIE
CSM63
- Save the list by pressing Ctrl-S. or by going to List->Save.

IV Forming the PARENTAL_LINES2008 list.
The selected varieties from the first list will be purified and out of them will be the parents of the crosses.
-
- Create a new list by selecting List>New>List from the List menu (or pressing Ctrl-L). Enter the name for the new list (PARENTAL_LINES2008), enter a title (List of Parental lines 2008), select the list type (LST) and check the date.
- Highlight VARLIST2008 from the SetGen Lists. Right click on it and select Browse (or press Ctrl-B).
- From the Browse list, right click under the Tag column and select "Tag All. All the rows under the Tag column will be marked with x. Click
"Advance a line one generation" button.

-
- A form will appear for generating a derivative line. That includes purified line. Under the Derivative Breeding Method, select "MAN 320 VPL PURE LINE FORMATION". Select DERIVATIVE NAME as Name Type.

-
- Specify the date and the location the line or germplasm is developed or harvested.
- The date should be in the format YYYY-MM-DD. In this example, the line is harvested on 2008-06-15.
- Select the location where the line is planted and harvested by clicking the (<Change) button. The "Select Location" form will appear. In this example, select MALI as country and BAMAKO as the location. Then click OK.

-
- Specify the date and location where the germplasm name is given. In this example, the date and location of the name are also 2008-06-15 and Bamako.
- Under the "Naming Convention of Designation", select the number of plants selected and specify numbers or characters that will be appended to the name of the germplasm.
For TIANDOGOU, enter 5 under Plants Selected. However, the plants will be variably identified. Select Variable and put 1,5,8,9,15 beside Range. The name of the lines that will be generated will TIANDOUGOU:1, TIANDOUGOU:5 etc.

-
- The lower section of the form is for naming the Entry Code (or it can be plot number) and Source. Leave the default setting for these sections.
- Click Ok.
